02What makes it different from a standard clearance
A hoarder clearance differs from a standard house clearance in scale, complexity, and approach. The defining features are usually:
- Volume. Multiple rooms with floor-to-ceiling accumulation, often with narrow pathways running through the contents.
- Mix of items. Ordinary clearance items such as furniture and electricals sitting alongside food waste, decades of paperwork, bags of unknown contents, and items the person regards as significant.

04Who pays for it?

- Probate estates, where the person has died and the property has to be cleared for sale or returned to a landlord.
- Council or social services, in cases of formal housing enforcement or welfare proceedings. This is uncommon. Fully funded council clearances generally happen only where there is a legal process, a serious safeguarding concern, or a fire risk that has triggered enforcement.

06Clearance versus biohazard remediation
There is an important distinction here, and getting it wrong costs people money.
