York bin collection: days, bins and what the council won't take

York splits household waste across three containers that work very differently: a black bin for general rubbish, a set of kerbside boxes for recycling, and a paid-for green bin for garden waste. This guide covers what goes where, how to find your collection day, what to do about a missed bin, and which items never go out at the kerbside in York - with what to do instead.

01York's three kerbside containers

The thing that catches people out: York does not collect recycling in a wheelie bin. Your recycling goes out in separate boxes that you sort yourself, not loose in a green bin. The green wheelie bin is for garden waste only, and only if you have paid for the subscription. There is no brown bin in York, and at the moment no separate food waste caddy.

The black bin and the recycling boxes are included in your council tax. The green garden bin is a separate paid service you have to sign up for.

02How to find your bin collection day in York

York collection days vary by street and area. The same road can sit on a different week to neighbouring streets, so there is no single city-wide schedule you can rely on.

The City of York Council website has a postcode-based collection day checker. Enter your postcode at york.gov.uk and select your address to see your specific days for the black bin, the recycling boxes, and the green garden bin. The checker also flags any changes around bank holidays.

Bank holidays usually push collections back by a day for the rest of that week. Put your bin or boxes out between 7pm the evening before and 7am on your collection morning - crews start early and will not come back for anything presented late.

03What goes in each container

Black bin - general household waste

The black bin is for non-recyclable household waste only, collected fortnightly. Typical black bin items include nappies, baby wipes, tissues and kitchen roll, cling film and plastic carrier bags, polystyrene packaging, and broken glass or crockery wrapped safely.

Food waste also goes in the black bin. York does not currently run a separate food waste caddy collection - national rules are changing, so check york.gov.uk for any new food service in your area.

What does not go in the black bin:

• Recyclable glass, cans, paper, card, cartons, or plastic bottles and tubs - those go in your recycling boxes
• Garden waste - that goes in the green subscription bin
• Electricals of any kind, including small appliances and batteries
• Paint, chemicals, solvents, or other hazardous waste
• Large or bulky items that stop the lid closing
• Building rubble, soil, or hardcore

Side waste - bags left beside the bin rather than inside it - is generally not collected. Everything needs to fit inside with the lid fully shut.

Recycling boxes - sorted at the kerbside

This is where York differs from a lot of councils. Instead of one mixed recycling bin, the council gives you boxes (three free, and they will collect up to six) and you sort recycling into two groups. Crews tip the boxes into separate compartments on the lorry, which is why the sorting matters.

Box one - bottles, cans, cartons and plastics (all loose together):

• Glass bottles and jars, rinsed (lids off)
• Food tins and drink cans, steel or aluminium
• Clean aluminium foil and foil trays (if it holds a scrunched shape, it is recyclable)
• Food and drink cartons - Tetra Pak style juice, soup, and milk cartons
• Plastic bottles, tubs and pots marked 1 (PET), 2 (HDPE) or 5 (PP) - drinks bottles, milk bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs

Box two - paper and card (kept separate):

• Newspapers, magazines, office paper, envelopes, junk mail
• Cardboard boxes and packaging, flattened
• Cereal boxes, paper bags, and cardboard tubes

Rinse and squash containers before they go in, and keep paper and card dry. What does not go in the recycling boxes:

• Plastic film, carrier bags, and bubble wrap
• Black plastic and polystyrene
• Broken glass, drinking glasses, and Pyrex - put broken glass in the black bin, wrapped
• Food-contaminated paper, card, or containers
• Textiles, nappies, and electricals

If you regularly have more recycling than your boxes hold, you can request extra boxes from the council rather than putting the overflow in the black bin.

Green bin - garden waste (subscription)

The green wheelie bin is for garden waste only and runs as a separate paid subscription. If you have not signed up and paid, your green bin will not be emptied.

Accepted in the green garden bin:

• Grass cuttings
• Leaves and leaf mulch
• Hedge and shrub trimmings
• Plant prunings, dead flowers, and weeds
• Small branches cut to fit inside the bin

What does not go in the green bin:

• Food or kitchen waste of any kind
• Soil, turf, or rubble
• Plastic bags, plant pots, or trays
• General household rubbish

04The York garden waste subscription

City of York Council runs the green garden bin as a paid annual subscription. You sign up and pay for the season before the bin will be collected, and you are sent a sticker to put on the bin.

For the 2026 season the charge is around £52, with collections running fortnightly from 2 March to 4 December 2026. Prices and dates change each year, so confirm the current figure on the council garden waste page before signing up. A discounted rate is available for some residents on Council Tax Support.

To sign up, visit york.gov.uk and search for "garden waste subscription." You will need your address and payment details. The scheme usually opens for renewals and new sign-ups in the winter, ahead of the new season starting in early March.

05What to do about a missed bin collection

If your bin or boxes were not collected on the scheduled day, report it to City of York Council. You can do this online through york.gov.uk or by phone. There is a reporting window after your collection day - check the current window on the council site, as it can change. Report outside the window and the council may not send a crew back before your next scheduled collection.

A few points that decide whether a miss gets put right quickly:

• Leave your bin or boxes at the kerbside after reporting. Do not bring them back in - the crew needs them out to collect when they return.
• If you moved them back inside before the crew returned, you may have to wait until the next scheduled collection.
• If the bin was not out by 7am on collection day, it is not classed as a missed collection.
• In icy or hazardous conditions some streets are skipped for safety and crews return when access is safe.

06What never goes kerbside - and what to do instead

Several categories of waste cannot go in any York kerbside container. Putting them out will not get them collected, and some are hazardous if handled wrongly.

Electrical items (WEEE)

Televisions, monitors, washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, microwaves, toasters, kettles, power tools, and anything with a plug or battery cannot go in any household bin or box. Take them to Hazel Court HWRC (booking required), use a retailer take-back scheme when buying a replacement, or call Mukin for collection.

Paint and solvents

Household paint, varnish, wood stain, and solvents are hazardous waste and cannot go in any bin. Take them to Hazel Court HWRC, which has a dedicated hazardous waste area. Small amounts of dried, water-based paint can sometimes go in the black bin - check york.gov.uk for current guidance.

Fridges and freezers

Fridges and freezers contain F-gases (refrigerants) that must be removed by a licensed engineer before disposal. They cannot go in any household bin or a standard skip. Take them to Hazel Court, book the council's bulky waste collection, or use a licensed collection service like Mukin.

Mattresses

Mattresses are too large for household bins and are not collected at the kerbside. Options include the council's bulky waste service, taking it to Hazel Court, or a private collection. See our mattress disposal York guide for the full breakdown of routes and costs.

Large furniture

Sofas, wardrobes, beds, and other large furniture cannot be left beside a bin for collection. Book the council's bulky waste service or use a house clearance or waste removal service. If the item is still in good condition, donation or reuse is worth exploring first.

Building rubble and hardcore

Bricks, tiles, plasterboard, concrete, and similar materials cannot go in household bins and are only accepted in small amounts at Hazel Court. 07York Council bulky waste collection

City of York Council offers a bulky waste collection for large items that do not fit in household bins - sofas, mattresses, white goods, and large furniture.

To book, visit york.gov.uk and search for "bulky waste collection." You describe the items and choose a collection date. There is a per-item charge - check the current fee on the council website, as prices change and this guide cannot guarantee accuracy.

Items go to the kerbside on the morning of your booked date; the council will not enter your property. If you cannot move items to the kerbside yourself, the bulky waste service is not practical and a private collection is the better fit. 08When a private collection makes more sense

York's kerbside collections and the council bulky waste service cover most household waste. But there are times when waiting for the council is not practical and a private collection is faster or more sensible.

• You need it gone today. Bins are fortnightly and bulky waste bookings often take one to three weeks. For same-day collection, a private service is the only route. Mukin offers same-day availability across York.
• The item is not on the council's accepted list. Building rubble, large amounts of garden waste, and certain hazardous materials fall outside what the bins or bulky waste service take.
• You cannot move items to the kerbside. The council requires bulky items at the kerbside. If you are elderly, unwell, or clearing items from upper floors or a garage, that is not always possible. A private collection comes to wherever the items are.
• You have a whole house, garage, or garden to clear. Multiple bulky waste bookings take weeks. For a full clearance, a single van and crew is faster, simpler, and often cheaper once you add up the per-item fees.
• You are working to a deadline. End of tenancy, probate, or a sale completion means it has to go by a fixed date. Private collections work around your schedule.
